Elevate your home workout with a balance board

Want to turn your next Zoom call into an intense workout? Meet the balance board.

They may look like something your kid would play with, but balance boards are capable of strengthening your core muscles, improving your posture, and helping you get the balance you’ve always dreamed of. One balance board turns the simple act of standing into a full-on full-body exercise.

And when you use one at your standing desk during a long online presentation, you’ll do all of that plus strengthen your ankles. What else should you do during the meeting? Taking notes?

Check out our ever-growing selection of balance boards for the one that’ll bring variety and fun back to your home workout (and home office).

What is a balance board?

A balance board – also known as a wobble board – is a small balance trainer that requires balance and core strength to stand on.

Some balance boards rock back and forth, while others wobble in complete circles. The goal with any balance board is, you guessed it, to challenge your balance and engage your core.

Beginners may find just standing on a balance board hard enough, while top athletes may perform bicep curls and even single-leg pistol squats while balancing. However, you use it, know this – your core is going to get a workout.

Benefits of exercising with a wobble board

A balance board helps with balance. We all know that… it’s even right there in the name. But a quality balance board is a multi-purpose tool that can do more than just improve balance.

Next-level core strength, better posture, killer calf muscles. These are also benefits of training with a balance board. And you can use a wobble board alone or combined with other movements for a seriously challenging workout.

Don’t believe us? Try Hawaiian squats while balancing on a balance board and then let us know how you feel.

Here are 5 of the top reasons to incorporate balance training with balance boards into your workout:

  1. Improved body awareness – The more you’re able to understand how your body moves, the less chance you have of injuring yourself in other training and sports.

  2. Better coordination – Balance training on a balance board requires your entire body to work together – upper body, lower body, and core. If it doesn’t… you fall. Improving your coordination will have real-world benefits for everyday life, too.

  3. Stronger, more stable joints – Balance training with a balance board strengthens the stabilizing muscles in your knees, ankles, hips, and shoulders. This increased joint strength and stability decreases the chance of injuries such as low back pain, sprained ankles, and serious knee problems.

  4. Faster reaction time – Wobble board training can help you develop a quick reaction time. That’s important for sports or activities where you need to be light and fast on your feet. Learning how to rebalance quickly will also help in daily activities.

  5. Advantages for long-term health – Sorry to bring the bad news, but as we age, we get weaker and are more prone to falls and fractures. Improving your balance (at any age) is something that won't let you down (literally). Instead, better balance will keep your core stronger and you'll be less prone to injury as you age.

What to look for when shopping for balance boards?

When it comes to choosing the best balance board for your home gym, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Material – Choose a balance board made from hardwood like pine or poplar or something equally durable in plastic.

  2. Grip – The surface texture on your wobble board is important. Too slippery and you’ll have an even harder time balancing on it. Go for a slip-resistant surface with a textured grip for plenty of stability. This way, you’ll be able to stand, sit and perform any number of balance board exercises.

  3. Tilt – When it comes to how far your balance board can tilt, we suggest aiming for around 15 degrees of tilt. Less will be easier, but you’re not buying a balance board for easy, right?!

  4. Fixed base – If you’re a beginner, choose a balance board with a fixed base. This lets the balance board move like a top and gives you a full range of motion to play around with.

  5. Removable base – Some balance boards come with a removable base that you can take off and switch from a wobble to a rocker type of motion. This is a great way to progress to harder exercises without having to buy a completely new board when it's time to level up.

The best balance board exercises

There are a ton of exercises that you can do with a wobble board. Unfortunately, we can’t list them all here. We talked about it and narrowed it down to 3 of our favorites.

Around the world with a balance board

  1. You can use any balance board for this exercise, but we suggest using a round one.

  2. Stand on the board and then slowly tilt forward.

  3. When you almost touch the floor with the tip of the balance board, shift your weight to move the tip to the other side.

  4. The idea is that you never actually touch the floor. Instead, keep the tip rotating.

  5. For a full balance workout, take one round clockwise and the next counterclockwise.

  6. For real beginners, try this exercise with bare feet. You'll have a better connection to the balance board trainer.

Balance board jump

  1. This exercise is for an intermediate to advanced level.

  2. Stand about 1 to 2 feet away from a round balance board.

  3. Jump and land with both feet on the board.

  4. The goal is to balance as quickly as possible without falling off.

  5. Repeat as many times as you need.

Single-leg pistol squats on a balance board

  1. This is an advanced exercise. For help, we suggest standing close to a wall or Swedish ladder.

  2. Stand on the balance board and slowly lift one leg.

  3. Perform a pistol squat without falling off the board.

  4. The goal is to not let the sides of the balance board touch the floor.

  5. Repeat 4 times, changing legs every time.

How often should you do balance exercises?

Balance training has no limit. You can practice on a balance board or wobble board every day if you want. You can even stand on one while working at your desk.

If you’re looking to add it to your exercise schedule, aim for 3-6 balance training sessions per week and 4-5 balance training exercises during each session.

For beginners, remember to put your wobble board next to a wall or use a Swedish ladder for extra support. At least until you get the hang of it. That’s also the best way to avoid injury when starting with balance training exercises.
