Discover barbells for cross-training, weightlifting, powerlifting, and more

Whether you’re looking for a functional fitness must-have, powerlifting your way to a Thor-like physique, or something to level up a stale workout, a barbell is the way to go.

Along with dumbbells, kettlebells, and weight benches, barbells are an iconic piece of equipment that every professional and home gym should have. And we’re not talking about an entire weight room, either. Get a bar and some plates and you’ll build muscle in no time.

Top 8 barbell benefits

Most people hear the word barbell and automatically think of a sweaty weightlifter with his eyes bulging out of his head. Truth is, barbells are for everyone.

Why are barbells so good for you? It’s because they provide a great form of strength training – one of the most important types of exercise.

Strength training with a barbell will:

  1. Make you stronger.

  2. Boost your metabolism.

  3. Help you lose weight by burning more calories.

  4. Increase your strength and thereby decrease your chance of injury.

  5. Improve cardiovascular health.

  6. Strengthen your bones.

  7. Boost brain function and focus.

  8. Improve your mood and help you sleep better.

With just a high-quality barbell and a set of weight plates, you can train your entire body and start seeing real results. And since you're in charge of how much weight you put on, you're in total control and can adjust each exercise according to your fitness level.

The beauty of a barbell is that most of the exercises you’ll perform will be compound movements – ones that require more than one muscle group + your core.

This type of training is a major part of functional fitness and is important for life. Instead of getting one big bicep, you’ll have improved strength from the inside (core) out.

How to shop for barbells

We know that starting with something as expensive as a barbell isn’t easy. Where do you even start looking? Good news! You’re in the right place for affordable barbells.

When shopping online for a barbell, always buy from a retailer you trust. At ShapeNation, we have years of experience and a plethora of happy customers to vouch for us.

In addition to buying from a shop you trust, you should also consider the type of bar, the weight, and the number of weight plates it holds.

Type of bar – Olympic or standard

When it comes to barbells, you’re going to have 2 main types: Olympic barbells and standard barbells.

Now, we’re talking about straight barbells – not a trap bar, curl bar, or tricep bar. Straight barbells are 2-handed weight bars used for squats, bench presses, lunges, and deadlifts.

Straight barbells vary in length from 4’ up to 7’. The bar you see on a squat rack is usually 7 feet. A typical standard barbell is around 40+ pounds without added weight plates.

One of the biggest differences is the ends of the bar that hold the weight plates (sleeves).

  • Olympic bars have 2” rotating sleeves and can handle heavier weights.

  • Standard bars have 1” non-rotating sleeves.

Bar weight capacity

When choosing a barbell, make sure it can hold the weight you’re aiming for. And that the bar itself isn’t too heavy alone.

If you’re new to lifting with a barbell, go for something on the low end – like a bar that can hold up to 250 pounds.

If you know you’re a powerlifter, choose one that can hold up to 1,000 pounds. Something else to consider is that the price of the bar varies depending on the amount of weight it can hold.

For beginners, there's nothing wrong with lifting only the bar. It weighs around 40+ pounds and will give you a great workout alone.

The best barbell exercises for strength and power

Can you build muscle with a barbell? Yes. There are a myriad of ways to train with barbells.

Before you start, it’s important to focus on your technique. We suggest starting with dumbbells, kettlebells, or just your bodyweight. This lets you work on your technique and form before picking up a 44-pound barbell, adding heavy weights, and hoping for the best.

Whatever you do, always go for a warm-up set with just the bar. This is an easy way to feel the movement before adding extra weight to the barbell.

When it comes to choosing the right amount of weight for strength training exercises, go for a weight you can lift a maximum of 10 times for 3 sets.

Here are a few of our favorite exercises fit for all levels. All you need is a barbell and your focus. Remember to add more weight to make any of these exercises more challenging.

Barbell front squat

Target: lower body (quads), glutes, core – takes the pressure off of your spine

  1. Using a rack for help, place the barbell high on your shoulders. Hold the bar with both hands, palms facing up.

  2. Back away from the rack and lower into a squat.

  3. Keep your core engaged and do not over arch your back or lean too far forward.

  4. At the bottom, push through your entire foot (don’t forget the heel) and return to standing.

  5. Perform 3 sets of 8-10 reps.

Barbell Romanian deadlift

Target: lower back, glutes, hamstrings

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.

  2. Bend over and grip the barbell with an overhand grip in front of your thighs.

  3. To stand, hinge your hips until the barbell is below your knees. Remember to keep the bar close to your body.

  4. Pause for a second before engaging your glutes and hamstrings to come to a standing position.

  5. Return the barbell to the ground and repeat.

  6. Perform 3 sets of 8-10 reps.

Barbell bent-over row

Target: back, shoulders

  1. With the barbell on the floor, stand with your feet hip-width apart.

  2. Hinge down and take the barbell. Your hands should also be shoulder-width apart.

  3. With your back straight and upper body bent at 45 degrees, bring the barbell up to your knees.

  4. Continue bringing the barbell close to your body between your sternum and navel.

  5. Pause at the top of the movement. Slowly lower the barbell and repeat.

  6. Perform 10-12 reps for 3 sets.

Barbell hip thruster

Target: glutes

  1. Using a weight bench, sit with your back against the bench and your butt on the floor.

  2. You’ll need some type of padding (a thick exercise mat works great) across your lap.

  3. With the padding in place, roll the barbell across your hips.

  4. Using the bench to hold you still, engage your glutes and push your hips into the air. You want your back and hips to be in a straight line.

  5. Keep your upper body still as you lower your hips back to the ground before repeating the movement.

  6. Perform 10-12 reps for 3 sets.
